This is a safe which left Bridgeport at the turn of the century. It belonged to the Gunter family, owners of the Bridgeport Land and Development Company and the Gunter Steam Boat Company. The City of Guntersville is also named for this family. The Gunter's moved to Texas, taking along this safe, which was shipped by rail.

Ken Gunter, grand son of the late Augustus Gunter had the safe in his building in San Angelo, where Mayor John Lewis spotted it a few years back. Lewis asked Mr. Gunter for the safe for the Bridgeport Depot Museum. Mr. Gunter agreed to donate the safe to the Depot, and return it to place from which it resided over a century ago.

In the summer of 2003, Bobby and Glen Hill, Curator of the Bridgeport Depot Museum flew to Texas and picked up the safe in a Ryder truck. The beautiful safe, with the original painting and mural of the Steamboat R.C. Gunter, now resides at the Depot Museum in Bridgeport.

Below are pictures of the safe being loaded on a truck in San Angelo, bound for Bridgeport. We will later try and put some pictures on the site of the safe being unloaded in Bridgeport, and inside the Museum.
