On the evening of May 5th, 2003 torrential rains began, and continued until early in the morning of May7th. Bridgeport was again, hit with a devastating blow, this time a flood. The City park was flooded, as well as many residents, who had to flee their homes in the middle of the night. following are some pictures from the latest of disasters to hit Bridgeport.
Picture from Sixth Street and the back of the park. The road was covered in water, as well as the Tennis Courts, Children's play ground and the pool. The softball fields were covered in 3' of water.
The swimming pool was covered in about 2.5 ft. of water, when TVA released water from the Nick-A-Jack Dam, water began receding inland, and to the park. Note the diving board, standing in water almost to the top.
People vacated their homes in the middle of the night, as water rose inside their homes as much as 3 and four feet.
It looked as if people had constructed houses in the middle of a rushing creek.
The water left much damage, as well as inches of mud and silt in the homes.
Getting to the Church by boat, the Rev. Gilliam and his followers, boating it to the Holiness Church on Hwy. 277 to try and salvage what the could.
One of the travel trailers, and buildings, almost covered in water. There is a Sewage Pump Station next to the car which was ruined. Raw sewage mixed with the flooding, was a hepatitis threat to the children who played in this water, and a breeding ground for Mosquitoes, and a possible threat later down the road of the West Nile Virus.
The Church and other buildings, with a car almost submerged by water.
Despite the damages, the avid church goers held services that Sunday after the flood.
Note Mobile home to the left, almost covered with water. |
